Pre-Digital Phone Line (PDPL)

A bridge to IP, not the final destination.

BT's Pre-Digital Phone Line (PDPL) service has been introduced to support certain legacy devices that cannot immediately move to IP connectivity. It can provide valuable breathing room for organisations managing large estates of PSTN-dependent assets.

However, PDPL should be viewed as a temporary transition service. It does not remove the need to modernise physical infrastructure, communications equipment or operational devices.

The key takeaway

PDPL can help extend the life of legacy assets, but eventually those assets will need to move to an IP-based solution.

Where PDPL can help

Supports some legacy PSTN-connected assets
Can reduce immediate migration pressure
Allows time to plan long-term solutions
Useful for difficult-to-replace equipment

Important limitations

Temporary service only
Does not remove the need for IP migration
Asset replacement will still be required
Not suitable as a long-term strategy

Long-term planning

Eventually every path leads to IP.

A common misconception is that moving core telephony services to SIP trunks removes all PSTN-related risk. In reality, many field assets continue to rely on legacy communications methods at the edge of the network.

When those assets are replaced or upgraded, the requirement for PDPL disappears and a permanent IP-based solution becomes necessary.

Need a migration plan?

GridSecure can help you look beyond PDPL.

We help organisations identify PSTN-dependent assets, assess temporary options such as PDPL and develop practical migration strategies towards secure IP-based connectivity.
